Poor. Weak. Unfortunate. Starving artist. Defenseless. These can all describe Van Gogh when he was alive. Now we see: Artist. Inspiration. Painter. Famous. Creative.
But it wasn't always that way. Van Gogh was poor and suffering, with little to no attention for him and his art. Vincent quoted his parents, “I ask for nothing, not so much as an old cup or saucer, only one single thing — that I be allowed to cherish and care for my poor, weak, tormented little wife as well as my poverty permits, without steps being taken to separate or hinder us or cause us sorrow.”
