Van Gogh was poor financially and had to rely on his brother Theo to keep him on his feet.
“But you know, don't you, that I consider you to have saved my life. I shall never forget that. . . . Money can be repaid, not kindness such as yours.” Nuenen, Dec., 1883 (letter 346 to Theo Van Gogh.)
In the article, Chronology of Vincent Van Gogh's life and works,” it explains, “He stayed in Brussels in the winter and met the painter Anthon van Rappard there. He received financial support from Theo.”
Theo was there for him, through thick and thin, whenever Van Gogh needed help.
